Investigator John M. Cleary Jr. retired after 23 years with the New York State Police, 12 of which were in a supervisory capacity coordinating and participating in major investigations with DEA, FBI, U.S. Customs, and Local Law Enforcement Agencies.
As a Sergeant with the New York State Police, he was responsible for the direct supervision of Uniformed Troopers and their duties. Responsibilities included the scheduling and coordinating of up to 50 Troopers with respect to various details, criminal search details, search warrant details, and immediate response details.Duties also included the training of new troopers reporting directly out of the New York State Police Academy .
As an Investigator/Acting Sr. Investigator in Narcotics, he was responsible for narcotics enforcement, strict inventory control of evidence, property, confidential records, and internal investigations. He also supervised several wiretap investigations, including multi-state, which resulted in the arrests and convictions of multiple defendants.As an acting Sr. Investigator his responsibilities included the training of recently promoted Troopers into the Narcotics Unit.
Investigator Cleary has been working as a Confidential Criminal Investigator for the past 8 ½ years in the Erie County district Attorney´s Office and is responsible for investigations in domestic violence, narcotics, arson, homicide, robbery, and other criminal investigations.
Investigator Cleary is a 1978 graduate of Canisius College. He graduated summa cum laude with his Masters Degree in Education in 1996 from Buffalo State College.His thesis was a training manuel for newly promoted police officers entering into a narcotics unit for which he received an "A." From here, Mr. Cleary became an Adjunct Professor at Erie Community College where he taught several Criminal Justice courses at the school´s three campuses. While teaching, Investigator Cleary was able to use his experience in the field to help students relate to the material being taught.
