Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the maritime industry both here and abroad has been subject to an ongoing security threat of major proportions. Through the United Nations, countries around the world have now joined forces to modify laws, increase requirements, and set new regulations for companies that do business in their territorial waters and ports of access.

The newly released International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, as delineated in the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) codes, have already had a major impact on those enterprises engaged in trade with the United States.
